Intern Weekend Trip to Valencia Day 1

Interns off to Valencia!

Interns off to Valencia!

It’s the day after the interns completed five weeks at their internship placement and are about to enter their 8th and final week of the program. It’s 8am on a Saturday morning and we have all met at the Atocha train station to set off to to Valencia! Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain and is famous for it beaches, being the birth place of paella and festivals like “La Tomatina” and “Las Fallas”. Two hours after we pulled out of Madrid we are arrived to the Valencia train station. 10am and the sun was warming and shining bright. We dropped off our suitcases, to our duplex rooftop apartment with stunning city center views, and began to explore the city.

Saturday we enjoyed a nice Spanish breakfast, then headed to the Valencia cathedral that has served the Christian community since the 4th century… yes, 4th century! This cathedral is filled with stunning paintings by Goya, architectural structures that span over several styles and an alter that is so intricate in detail that I was memorized by all the gold details for almost 30 mins.  Afterwards we climbed the infamous bell tower “Miguelete” … How many steps you ask? 207! ¡Madre Mía! – we got to the top and almost couldn’t drink up the stunning panoramic views. However, once we took a quick rest and stared at the great bell dedicated to St. Michael, we relished the views and tried to capture the beauty with our cameras.

So, what’s next after a 207 step decent – enjoying a delicious Valencia horchata drink. Horchata is a Valencia favorite drink, made of tigernuts and is extremely refreshing. After, we headed off to a relaxing paella lunch that was long and filled with so much laughter we were in tears. Like true Spaniards we headed back to our flat to enjoy some down time and most of us got ready to enjoy some of the night action that Valencia has to offer. We walked around barrio Carmen which was young, trendy and loads of action. It was a nice ending to a culturally rich day!
